Discover Purslane

If you’ve never tried purslane, you’re in for a treat at one of Milwaukee’s most charming spots, located at 1751 N Farwell Ave, Milwaukee, WI 53202. This unassuming yet flavorful green is quickly becoming a favorite at local restaurants, and it’s easy to see why. Packed with vitamins and a subtle peppery kick, purslane adds a refreshing twist to any dish. Whether you’re a longtime fan or a first-timer, this spot is perfect for exploring this unique, versatile ingredient.

The menu at this diner-style restaurant brings a delightful mix of traditional comfort foods and modern twists, and purslane has found its way into a few creative dishes that will definitely catch your attention. If you're familiar with the classic tastes of the Midwest but looking for something new, this is the perfect place to experience something a bit more adventurous. For instance, their signature salad incorporates purslane as a fresh, crunchy base, balancing out the richness of creamy dressings and vibrant vegetables. It’s a refreshing surprise, especially for those who may not know how delightful this plant can be.

But the real star is the way purslane is incorporated into more unexpected menu items. Take their famous tacos, for example. These aren't your average taco; they’re loaded with tender, slow-cooked meats, topped with a tangy salsa, and garnished with a few fresh sprigs of purslane. The plant’s naturally tart and slightly citrusy flavor pairs so beautifully with the smoky, savory elements of the taco. It’s a combination that truly highlights how well purslane can complement heavier dishes, offering a lightness and burst of flavor without overpowering the other ingredients.

When dining here, you'll notice that purslane isn’t just a garnish. It’s used thoughtfully, either sautéed lightly or added fresh, depending on the dish. This ensures that the plant’s unique texture-crisp and succulent-is maintained, adding a satisfying crunch or a burst of flavor when it’s served raw. It’s clear that the chefs have spent a good deal of time experimenting with this ingredient, finding ways to maximize its potential.

For a side dish, their crispy fried purslane is another delightful offering. The leaves are lightly battered, and they come out of the fryer golden and crispy, a far cry from the usual side salads you might expect. This innovative take on a traditional crispy snack shows just how versatile purslane can be, taking on a completely different texture and flavor when prepared this way. It’s a perfect balance between being both light and indulgent.

One of the best things about this location is how they manage to keep their dishes fresh, using local ingredients, including purslane, which they source from nearby farms. The team is passionate about supporting local growers, ensuring that each meal is not only delicious but also sustainable. This commitment to quality and the use of fresh, locally grown produce really shines through in every bite. And if you’re a regular, you’ll be glad to know that the menu often changes with the seasons, offering exciting new ways to enjoy purslane as it’s at its peak.

The atmosphere of the restaurant also deserves a mention. It’s cozy yet vibrant, with an eclectic mix of old-school diner charm and modern design. Whether you’re coming in for a quick bite or settling in for a longer meal with friends, you’ll feel right at home. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and always happy to share their recommendations. Don’t hesitate to ask them for their take on the best ways to enjoy purslane-they’re always eager to guide newcomers through the menu and offer suggestions.

It’s also worth mentioning that this spot has earned a strong reputation from both locals and tourists alike, with glowing reviews that rave about not just the food but the overall dining experience. The combination of unique ingredients, like purslane, with the diner’s comforting atmosphere makes it a must-visit destination in Milwaukee.

So if you're in the area, whether you're already a fan of purslane or just curious to try something new, swing by and enjoy a meal that’s as fresh as it is flavorful. With dishes that elevate the humble green into something truly exciting, this restaurant will undoubtedly leave you craving more. It’s clear that purslane is more than just a passing trend-it’s here to stay.

  • We love everything! The location couldn’t get a better chef to be there. The food was tasty with lots of spices that we can’t find in any other restaurant. The staff were always welcoming and trying to get all Information to be a great place. Try their wine because you can’t find it anywhere or one of their unique cocktails.

  • The food was exceptional (the scallops on another level entirely) and the cocktails were outstanding! Kyle, the cocktail wizard, chatted with us about some of our picks and it’s clear that he has passion for what he does. Sometimes it’s difficult to find cocktails that aren’t typically what you’d make at home… this place experiments so that you don’t have to, and Kyle hits it out of the park! Thank you for a lovely dinner, Purslane! We will certainly be back

  • This place was adorable and the tea was delicious. Our bartender Kyle made a delicious “horseshoe arch” which was tequila, lime, strawberry, ancho verde and sumac salt, very good drink. We tried multiple dishes and WILL be coming back.

  • We had the most incredible dinner at Purslane - easily one of the best meals we’ve had in Milwaukee in a long time. My husband even said it was some of the best bites of food he’s had here in a while. Every detail was thoughtful, starting with the delicious tea they serve to open the meal. Each dish was creative, flavorful, and beautifully executed. Truly a dining experience rather than just a dinner. It wasn’t just the food that impressed us, though. The little touches set Purslane apart, like the thoughtfully stocked bathroom (toothpicks, lens cleaners, feminine products, hair ties - a dream for any guest), and the sweet finish of Turkish delights at the end of the night. Purslane nails it all: incredible food, warm hospitality, and the kind of details that make you feel genuinely cared for. Already dreaming of our next visit.

  • A delightful farm-fresh, Mediterranean inspired experience. The staff is warm and knowledgeable, the setting small enough to feel personal, and the food fresh, delicious and thoughtfully presented. So grateful to have Purslane in the neighborhood!

  • Fantastic food, drinks and service. We ordered the short rib, wings, trio, salad and apple desert. For drinks we each had a house cocktail and aperitif (of which the lists were very impressive). It was all incredible. Made even better by the very kind and attentive staff. Looking forward to coming back!

  • We had such a great experience! Chef Mary created amazing dishes that all worked so well together. You can really tell how passionate she is about farm driven Mediterranean inspired food. Everything was fresh and full of flavor. Our server Maddie was wonderful, so kind and helpful, and made great recommendations. She helped us pick the perfect wine and guided us through what to order. Overall, delicious food, great vibes, and genuinely warm people. We can’t wait to come back!

  • We enjoyed a wonderful dinner at Purslane. Overall amazing experience from the attention of the staff, the ambiance, and the outstanding food. We had: Tuna- spice crunchy togarashi rice added a great texture and perfectly complemented the delicate tuna/strawberry flavors. Squash Blossoms (a limited special)- creamy/ filling and a delicate crunch from the frying. We especially loved how they were paired with an intense tomato confit. I wanted to lick the plate. I should have. Now I’m regretting that I didn’t. Walleye Falafel: These were a favorite; we loved rolling them up and eating them like little tacos. Wings- Tender and great flavored sauce. Picture not included of my face smeared with the sauce. Beef Kebab- another favorite- incredible tender beef and the creamy eggplant sauce and fava beans lightened it up to make it a great summery dish. Spanish gin and tonic Negroni Everything was very fresh and perfectly seasoned. I almost “accidentally” stabbed my husband’s hand with my fork as we fought for the last bites of the kebab. We can’t wait to go back and try the rest of their menu. The wine menu looked especially interesting and the table next to us was raving about the meze trio, so we hope to try that next time.
